L’abbaye
The
Fontevraud abbey was founded in 1101 by an original preacher
for the time that, without worrying about the manners in use,
created a mixed monastery whose authority he entrusted to
a woman which provoked a real controversy among his peers
... Subsequently, 36 abbesses will follow one another at the
head of the Fontevrist Order which extended throughout the
Europe.L'Abbaye received important donations from the Counts
of Anjou and in particular from Henry II of Plantagenet and
his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine who made Fontevraud a necropolis
Royal. This is how the recumbents of Aliénor d'Aquitaine,
her husband Henry II Plantagenet and their son Richard Lion's
Heart, are exhibited in the abbey church. In 1804, the abbey
was transformed into a prison, according to the wish of Napoleon
1st. It was one of the roughest prison in France ... Nowadays,
exhibitions, concerts, shows, screenings, conferences and
workshops are organized as part of the abbey. Since May 2021,
the abbaye welcome a Modern
Art Museum, created from the Martine and Léon Cligman's
collection. The prayer Saint-Lazare has been transformed into
a design
hotel-restaurant top of the line. |
